The idea for Latino Bigs began in New York City in 2007 when a group of committed volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City realized that more Latino mentors were needed. In partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, they founded Latino Bigs, with the mission of empowering the Latino community through one-to-one mentoring to ensure that Latino children in New York have access to positive adult role models to help expand their horizons, realize their potential and enrich their futures. Their slogan “Atrévete a cambiar una vida” challenges supporters to “dare to change a child’s life.”

Latino Bigs NYC grew over time, and now conducts monthly meetings to support current Latino volunteers and develop creative ideas that will inform and involve Latino New Yorkers, raising awareness about the needs of Latino children in the New York City community and sharing the power of mentoring. With more than 100 members, Latino Bigs NYC speaks out and spreads the word by organizing fun community events that will attract much-needed mentors.

In 2012, building on the success of the grassroots partnership in New York City, a national Latino Bigs initiative was kicked off during Hispanic Heritage Month. The initiative aims to connect Latinos through the web and social media by sharing the real stories of volunteers and champions of mentoring.

With the launch of the national Latino Big initiative, Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrates progress made both locally and nationally in employing culturally relevant mentoring approaches to guide and empower youth to succeed in life. As committed volunteers in communities across the nation follow the lead of the dedicated group of individuals that founded Latino Bigs NYC, Big Brothers Big Sisters will be able to meet the demands of a growing population and serve more children.
